Curator & art writer

Anna-Valeska Liesche

Exhibitions with a thesis. Texts that make art readable. And a legally trained eye that accompanies both.

I work with artists, galleries and editorial teams — from the first idea for an exhibition to the text that conveys it, and the catalogue raisonné that documents it.

What I do, and for whom

Three audiences, one shared core: making art understandable, visible and well documented. This is what each of them gets from me.

01

For artists

  • Artist texts & statements
  • Exhibition concepts
  • Catalogue raisonné & work documentation
  • Copyright basics for documentation and exhibitions

02

For galleries

  • Exhibition & press texts
  • Curatorial concept
  • Catalogue & collection texts
  • Wall & room texts

03

For art magazines

  • Essays & criticism
  • Artist portraits
  • Art-historical contextualisation
  • Editorial text work

Every project starts with the same question: What should this work, this exhibition, this text set off in the person facing it? Everything else follows from there — concept, language and clean documentation.

I do not offer legal advice. On copyright topics I give general information and refer individual questions to lawyers.

A selection from my collaboration with the Karlsruhe artist Marvin Meyer — from art-historical contextualisation and exhibition concept to the catalogue and catalogue raisonné. The texts were written in German; the excerpts below are translations.

Art-historical contextualisation

Pure Art — L'art pour l'art

“This stance takes up the idea of ‘l'art pour l'art’ – art for its own sake. […] That art does not have to serve anyone does not mean that it cannot open itself to anyone. This is exactly where Marvin Meyer comes in: he takes the freedom of pure art seriously – and makes it accessible.”

ContextCafé Rosé

Text for the café, in its own “we” voice

Café Rosé — A Total Work of Art for the Senses

“At Café Rosé, two worlds meet: the impulsive power of art and the refined culture of enjoyment. […] We do not understand this overall experience as a closed system, but as an open stage. We believe that art unfolds its true power only in dialogue.”

“
Ms Liesche developed an innovative exhibition concept that brought out the particularities of my works and my artistic vision to excellent effect. […] I can recommend Ms Liesche without reservation for future projects.”
Marvin Meyer — Artist, Karlsruhe · Reference letter of 8 July 2024, translated from German

Anna-Valeska Liesche worked for the artist Marvin Meyer from August 2022 to March 2023: exhibition concept, texts for the flyer and catalogue, upkeep of the catalogue raisonné and digital presentation of his work.

About

Three disciplines, rarely in one person

I combine art-historical depth to place works in context, writerly precision to convey them, and a legal eye to keep an overview of everything around them — copyright, contracts, catalogue raisonné — and to ask the right questions.

I studied art history and law and work from Hamburg for artists, galleries and editorial teams in the German-speaking world. From the curatorial idea through the text to clean documentation, I bring together what is otherwise often spread across several people.
